Mizoram University came into being through the enactment of Parliament (No. 8 of 2000) and commenced its operations on July 2, 2001. Situated in Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, the university sprawls across 978.1988 acres on the outskirts of the city. Before the establishment of Mizoram University, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) operated a campus in Mizoram with its headquarters in Shillong. Supervised by a Pro-Vice Chancellor, the former Mizoram Campus of NEHU housed seven Post-Graduate Departments: Economics, Education, English, Forestry, Mizo, Psychology, and Public Administration. Over the past 22 years, Mizoram University has witnessed significant advancements in infrastructure, academic offerings, faculty strength, and support services.

The Mizoram State Pollution Control Board conferred a Grade ‘A’ rating upon the University following a Green Audit conducted on the University Campus in March-April 2013. Distinguished as an eco-friendly institution, it stands as one of the pioneering universities in the country to operate efficiently on a Solar Power System. The Solar photovoltaic power plant sustains the electricity needs of the Academic Buildings, Hostels, Administrative Blocks, and streetlights throughout the Campus, showcasing the university’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.
